Marsh Pratley's book 'The Road to Orchid Lakes'
From his early childhood struggles Marsh aspired to the ownership of Orchid Lakes near Oxford – within quarter of an hour of Didcot, where Marsh was born and brought up – in the mid-1990s. Marsh has developed the fishery into the popular complex it is today. Known as ‘The Home of the Thirties’, the main lake certainly lives up to its reputation, and the Club Lake, adjacent to the main Orchid Lake, now houses catfish to mid-60s in weight.
When Marsh sent the material through for Cyprynews we suggested his potted autobiography was worthy of appearing in book form. This spurred Marsh into action. ‘I’ll pay for it and the proceeds can go to the Carp Society!’ was his immediate, extraordinary reaction. The next was to enlist the support of some long-term friends into making written contributions to the book. The result is a 176-page heavily-illustrated book which includes chapters by Marsh himself, Chris Ball, Simon Crow, Derek Stritton, Rob Hughes, Phil Smith, Ian Russell, Kev Hewitt, Tim Paisley, Russ Webb, and Steve Pope
As many of you will know Marsh is suffering from terminal cancer and is beyond treatment: though he remains active he has no idea how long he has left. In buying this book you will be raising Marsh’s spirits, and making a great contribution to the Carp Society, of which Marsh was once Chairman, and is currently a director. But the book isn’t just about the past. The overhead photography, session descriptions, plan of the lake, and pictures of the swims and fish make this a must-have book for anyone who will be fishing Orchid in the future.
Leaving emotion aside this is a book worthy of a place on anyone’s bookshelf.
